Commission from PRISM Quartet and Generate New Music 2023
Generate Music is a new collection of compositions exploring the ties between Black and Jewish Americans—music celebrating the endurance, contributions, and intersections of two diasporic peoples. PRISM Quartet commissions eight Black and Jewish composers and premieres their works in June 2024 in Philadelphia and New York City. Many of the composers are also musicians; they will join PRISM to form an ensemble that includes Tyshawn Sorey (drums), Susan Watts (trumpet/vocals), Ursula Rucker (spoken word), David Krakauer (clarinet), Diane Monroe (violin), and others. Generate Music will include panel discussions hosted by Temple University Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection and the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, and a recording for PRISM’s label, XAS Records, distributed by Symphonic and Naxos Music Library.
